Wednesday 12 October 2011
07:30 - 17:30 Conference registration
18:15 - 23:00 Cultural Evening and Gala Diner
We would like to invite all participants to attend the banquet. Like many people, when you think of the Netherlands, the first thing that may come to mind is dikes. But think about the sea behind them, and how much of our prosperity, culture and identity we owe to the people who saw the opportunity of the sea and sailed out to find it. Het Scheepvaartmuseum, The National Maritime Museum tells their stories.
The museum is a true Amsterdam landmark. Just a short walk from the historical centre, it stands in one of the city’s biggest 17th century buildings, a storehouse for the Dutch war fleet dating from 1656. And after a four-year renovation, Het Scheepvaartmuseum has opened its doors to the public again on Sunday 2 October 2011 so we will be one of the first groups having our event at the newly renovated venue!
Het Scheepvaartmuseum houses one of the world's biggest collections of nautical art and artefacts, including globes, paintings, ship models, and more. The collection is the backbone of fascinating exhibitions about the Netherlands and the country's elemental connection with the sea. And these exhibits do not neglect to show the darker side of the romance and adventure, like the Netherlands’ role as coloniser and oppressor. They also make the connection between the past and the present, and can illuminate current issues like globalisation and the environment in the light of a historical perspective.
Visitors to Het Scheepvaartmuseum can experience the sea stories of yesterday and today.. And the replica of the Dutch East Indiaman the Amsterdam, docked alongside the quay, is perhaps the museum’s biggest attraction, literally and figuratively.
Transport A boat will bring you to the Scheepvaartmuseum. Departure between 18.15 – 18.30 hrs. from the harbour dock in front of the Passengers Terminal Amsterdam. Please do not forget to bring your ticket! After the banquet, bus transport from the Scheepvaartmuseum to the Moevenpick will be provided, but it is also on a 20 minute (1.4km) walking distance.
The banquet is at disposal for all full registrants and registered accompanying persons! Please do indicate your participation in your registration. Some tickets are still available last-minute on a first come, first served base at the registration desk, for an amount of € 150.
